Dr. Denise Braithwaite-Tennant, is Chief Medical Officer of InterHealth’s Turks and Caicos Hospital and ensures that the hospital’s operations coincide with the company’s vision of sustainable, quality health care delivery. She has been instrumental in leading the hospital towards a diamond re-accreditation: the highest possible award by Accreditation Canada. After studying for a Bachelor of Science in biology in the United States, Dr Braithwaite gained a degree in general medicine from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and a Specialty in Emergency Medicine from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. Her career has seen her work at hospitals in Barbados, Connecticut and every level one facility in Jamaica.
Dr. Braithwaite-Tennant worked in Jamaica for the Ministry of Health and Human Services as a medical officer from August 1999 to May 2009. During her tenure in Jamaica, she gained invaluable experience working with several of the large hospitals in the area of Emergency Medicine, Trauma and Disaster management. She gained her specialist medical certification in the field of Emergency Medicine from the University of the West Indies at its Mona Jamaica campus. During her training, she was responsible for the management of patient care and flow, junior medical and nursing staff and continuing educational programs. She also visited the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados and the Hartford Hospital in the United States during her international elective period as part of her specialty training. During this period, she gained insightful exposure on the service delivery at regional and internal emergency departments.
Dr. Braithwaite-Tennant returned to the Turks and Caicos Islands and worked for the Ministry of Health and Human Services from July 2009. During her tenure at the Ministry, she joined the health care team as the Turks and Caicos Islands’ first Belonger consultant specialist Emergency Medicine physician to be employed.
In April 2010 when the Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital InterHealthCanada TCI Ltd commenced operations Dr. Braithwaite-Tennant was transferred to its Cheshire Hall Medical Centre Emergency Department where she was the lead Consultant. In May 2014, Dr. Braithwaite-Tennant was promoted to Chief of Medical Services.
Dr. Braithwaite-Tennant was recently awarded a Masters in International Management with a specialization in Health sector management from the University of Liverpool United Kingdom in November 2014.
